Remembering the Past, Embracing the Future

Fort Meade is much more than a bedroom community.  Nestled along Peace River and at the cross-hairs of U.S. Hwy. 98 and U.S. Hwy. 17, Fort Meade is a Polk County Gateway Community considered primed for the future while honoring the past. Industry and ventures are seeing Fort Meade as the economic opportunity, while yet nurturing that hometown feel with small schools, community activities, parks, and downtown business area.
This charming community lies midway between Tampa and Orlando,  and is only about a 45-minute drive to many area attractions that appeal to everyone, such as Walt Disney World, Adventure Island Water Park, Sea World, Busch Gardens, and Legoland, just to name a few.  Streamsong Resort, a renowned10,000 acre golf and spa resort, is only a few miles from Fort Meade and home to one of the most premier golf courses in the area.
The city maintains several parks, the largest of which is the Fort Meade Recreational Area located along the banks of Peace River, a 57-mile waterway that flows through Central Florida to the Gulf of Mexico.  This park is a popular launching and pick-up site for canoe and kayak enthusiasts, and is ideal for fishing, fossil hunting, or just enjoying a quiet walk in the 120 acre wooded area.  Picnic tables, pavilions, and barbeque grills are available for family gatherings. Fort Meade is an official Blueway Community.
Fort Meade’s downtown district offers visitors a variety of goods and services from food to antiques. Several individually-owned businesses provide customers unique gifts, and the latest trends in clothing and apparel.  While Fort Meade continues its century-long standing as a leader in the citrus industry, the community has recently been chosen by U.S. EcoGen as a site for its innovative bio-mass energy plant.
